A firefighting team from Wanaka won first place in the women's section of the annual Otago-Southland rural firefighting Wajax competition, which was held in Te Anau on Saturday.

The firefighting foursome have competed for the past decade in the yearly Wajax competition, and also made a clean sweep of the five winners' trophies in 2006.

Team spokeswoman Sue Templeton said they put their success down to experience and an intense six-week training period.

The Wanaka women outshone their male counterparts, who managed a "dismal'' sixth place in the men's competition, Wanaka Chief Fire Officer Steve Trevathan said.

The Wajax competition involves four-person teams from various volunteer rural fire brigades from across Otago and Southland, who race each other to carry and set up their hoses and equipment, he said.

A Lake Hawea fire brigade team took second place in the men's Wajax competition.
