First Roxburgh dawn service in 90 years

A dawn service will be held in Roxburgh tomorrow. Roxburgh Returned Services Association president Andy Reed said it would be a first in at least 90 years.

It was a trial run for a dawn service planned in 2015, to mark the centenary of the Gallipoli landings.

A parade will begin at 7am from the town hall to the children's playground, about 200m away.

Pipers and the Pioneer Generation Brass Band will be included.

The guest speaker for the service will be Graye Shattky, of St Bathans.

Mr Reed had heard a lot of comments about the earlier service and hoped that meant there would be a good turnout.

The service is expected to be finished by 8am, in time for the 9am service at Millers Flat.

If the dawn service went well, there was a possibility that Roxburgh and Millers Flat might be able to alternate dawn and mid-morning services each year, he said.

A dawn service will also take place in Ranfurly, from 6.30am.

Other services in Central Otago are: Alexandra, 10.45am; Bannockburn, 9am; Clyde, 8.15am; Cromwell, 10am; Omakau, 9.45am.
