Four new faces voted on trust

A mayoress, a former mayor, a Cromwell businessman and a Cromwell horticulture lecturer are the new faces on the Central Lakes Trust.

Twenty-one candidates stood for the six places on the charitable trust and the only two trustees who were eligible for re-election, trust chairman Sir Eion Edgar, of Queenstown, and deputy chairman Graeme Bell, of Alexandra, topped the poll.

Voting closed at noon yesterday and the new trustees elected were former Central Otago mayor Malcolm Macpherson, of Alexandra, Central Otago mayoress and Central Otago REAP manager Bernie Lepper, of Earnscleugh, Otago Polytechnic horticulture lecturer Alex Huffadine and insurance and investment adviser Greg Wilkinson, both of Cromwell.

Former Otago Regional Council chairwoman Louise Rosson, of Cromwell, was the highest polling unsuccessful candidate.

The former chief executive of Pioneer Generation, Peter Dowling, of Clyde, former Queenstown Lakes District councillor Gillian Macleod, of Queenstown, and Central Otago District Councillor Gordon Stewart, of Cromwell, were among the other unsuccessful candidates.

The trust was established a decade ago with $155 million worth of assets from the Otago Central Electric Power Board. Since then, it has distributed more than $50 million in grants to community projects and services within the former power board area.

Trustees are only permitted to serve a maximum of three three-year terms.

Sir Eion and Mr Bell were both elected in 2004, so this will be their last term.

The new trustees replace Liz Duggan, of Alexandra, Mike Allison, of Wanaka, Duncan Butcher and Peter Mead, both of Cromwell, who retired as they had served three terms.

The voter turnout this election was 29.2%, compared with 31.3% in 2007.

There were 28 informal votes and 20 blank votes returned.
