Freezing start prompts road warnings

It's a cold start to the day in the South, with temperatures as low as -4degC in some places.

At 7.15am, Dunedin Airport had a temperature of - 4.1degc, according to MetService. Alexandra aerodrome was on -4.2degC.

The Dunedin City Council advises of areas of isolated frost around the city, and says ''great care'' is required when driving.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council says conditions are ''extreme'' on roads in the area, and is urging motorists to take extra care.

MetService says most of Otago is in for a fine start with severe frosts in sheltered places. High cloud is expected to increase through the day, and there could be some rain from late afternoon.

The Central Otago District Council supplied the road report below.
