Alexandra Lions Club 4WD Safari event convener and guide Barry McCall said it had capped the maximum number of vehicles at 45 to ensure a great experience for everybody on the tour.
"With a smaller group, we can give them all instructions and they tend to obey them better."
Registrations for passenger spots for those who did not have a suitable vehicle also quickly filled, he said.
The event, to be held on January 11, would follow a route leaving Alexandra via Lookout Road behind Clyde and into the Nevis Valley before the safari would stop at a private museum for lunch and a look around, he said.
The safari would then continue on through Duffer’s Saddle and go through the remains of Carricktown, an old mining town, before finishing in Bannockburn. The terrain the vehicles would drive over on the journey was something you would not take a car over, meaning only SUVs could take part.
During the drive, participants would be able to listen in to a commentary about the history of Nevis Valley by author Louise Joyce.
"I've done it before so I'm aware of what's ahead of us and it is a good trip," Mr McCall said.
There was less than a month to go before the event, and it would be a great day for all involved if the weather held up, he said.
It was a fundraiser, and St John was selected to receive funds from the event.
Usually the Lions Club went to St John to purchase for it something that would be helpful to the organisation, but that would be confirmed at a later date, Mr McCall said.
