Glory days remembered

Several dozen New Zealand owners of Bentleys doffed their caps on Saturday to the drivers who made the brand famous on the racetracks of Europe in the 1920s and '30s.

The group - travelling the country to mark the 100th anniversary of the first Bentley to come off the production line - took the cars for a few laps of the Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell.

The "Bentley Boys" dominated at Le Mans in the late 1920s, but at Cromwell a century later, the pace was more stately.

The drivers reported a few minor mechanical problems on their tour - such as oiled spark plugs in the case of Richard Owen, of Christchurch (pictured), but had enjoyed perfect weather.

The cars are heading to Invercargill before finishing the tour at Ashburton.
