The woman killed in a head-on collision near Alexandra on Monday was an American citizen based in Wanaka.

She was Kirra Lee Smith (23).

Ms Smith was driving a Toyota Caldina station wagon and the passenger in the vehicle was Tessa Senior (22), a British citizen, who was also living in Wanaka.

Ms Senior was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital with moderate injuries after the crash and was awaiting surgery in hospital last night.

Maxwell James Birtles (62), of Cromwell, was the other driver involved in the collision. He had been driving a Holden Captiva 4WD and was also airlifted to Dunedin Hospital on Monday. Mr Birtles was in the general surgery ward yesterday, but an update on his condition was not available.

Central Otago police sub-area commander Senior Sergeant Ian Kerrisk said initial inquiries showed one vehicle had crossed into the path of the other. The matter was still being investigated, he said yesterday.

Constable Lance Davies, of Roxburgh, said the two women involved in the crash were friends. He had been dealing with the British and American embassies in the aftermath of the accident.

Const Davies, a police iwi liaison officer, performed a karakia yesterday to bless the crash site.
