The winner of this year's Keep Alexandra Clyde Beautiful best street competition is Kamaka Cres.
Chairwoman Maureen Davies said the judges looked for certain criteria.
‘‘We thought it was the brightest. [It had] lovely bright flower gardens and it was very tidy at the time. Everything was flowering and we were impressed by it this year.''
O'Neill Cres, Pines Rd and Orchard Dr (last year's best street) were highly recommended.
Best cul-de-sac was Vincent Pl and highly recommended were Fir Close, Mayfair Dr and Hart Pl.
Certificates were also presented to five Best Water Wise Gardens belonging to Marion Meehan, Helen Noone, Bruce and Ngaire McSkimming, Neville and Mavora Meek and John and Barbara Campbell.
‘‘We picked five that we thought were good examples, and they are all very different kinds of water-wise gardens.
‘‘Water is such an issue in Alexandra we thought it would be a good idea to give a certificate to each property which had water-smart garden characteristics but also had an attractive garden.''
Judge Helen Hillis was looking for small lawns, dry-land plants, good mulch covering and easy care.
‘‘We tried entries two years ago and it didn't work. Nobody entered, so we thought when we did the best street competition we would go around and just pick gardens.''
Gardens that had been professionally designed and landscaped were included.
‘‘We were well aware that a lot of them are done by landscape gardeners these days.''
