An unusual abundance of orange road cones in Alexandra's town centre is proving irresistible to late-night revellers, who have unhelpfully been rearranging them.
"Just leave the road cones alone - they are there for a reason " was the warning yesterday from Constable Toni Velenski, of Alexandra.
Road works are being carried out on several sections of Centennial Ave (State Highway 8) as part of a $1.1 million upgrade. The work includes a pedestrian refuge, a new roundabout, cycle lanes and replacing angle parks with parallel parks.
The Central Otago District Council is upgrading water mains at the same time.
Road cones marking the road works should be left where they are, Const Velenski said.
"We've had people removing the road cones, rearranging them to block the road and even rearranging some of the fencing around the road works," she said.
"If transport is endangered by these things being removed or rearranged, there could be dire consequences and the people responsible will be charged."
Most of the unhelpful activity took place at night and the majority was probably "alcohol-fuelled".
Some of the road cones were there to warn motorists about the danger of large potholes and the others also marked potential road hazards.
