Two Alexandra people were ''very lucky'' to escape major injury when their station wagon hit a truck-and-trailer unit on State Highway 8 at Waitahuna yesterday morning.

Senior Constable Robert Wallace, of Lawrence, said a Mitsubishi Libero station wagon was on State Highway 8 travelling towards Milton when it collided with an unladen truck-and-trailer unit turning into Waitahuna off the highway at 10.40am.

A 38-year-old Alexandra woman, who was a passenger in the station wagon, was taken to Dunedin Hospital with leg injuries, and the driver, a 70-year-old Alexandra man, suffered minor injuries.

The 25-year-old West Coast man who was driving the stock truck was uninjured. Snr Const Wallace said the station wagon hit the left rear wheels of the truck unit, which had stopped the car sliding under the truck.

''The occupants were very lucky.''

There was fog in the area when the crash took place, and it was a reminder for people to drive to the conditions, he said.

The commercial vehicle investigation unit from Alexandra and police are investigating.
