St Mary's Church at Omakau could be sold in a few months.

Dunedin Anglican Diocesan manager Graeme Sykes said an offer had been received from an organisation interested in purchasing the property in Leask St.

He would not give details on the interested party other than it had affiliations with the Anglican church ''through the network''.

The diocese had met the interested organisation and was still waiting to hear back from it Mr Sykes said it may have an answer ''around September''.

Although for sale, the property was not officially listed on the market and the church had not appointed an agent.

''Basically the parish and the diocese had agreed they want to sell the property,'' he said.

While it was the only offer the diocese had received on the property, it had attracted ''interest from people in the community''.

However, selling the church to an individual or organisation with church affiliations might ''carry some issues''.

''How do you settle on a price, because it's not in the public domain,'' he said.

''It's like family. How do you sell something to your brother?'' The church had not been deconsecrated.

It was decided early this year to begin the process of selling St Mary's church and St Michael and All Angels Church in Clyde due to declining numbers.

However, the diocese decided to keep the church in Clyde, which is a Heritage New Zealand category 2 building and one of the oldest in the area.

Anglican Bishop of Dunedin the Rt Rev Dr Kelvin Wright said the Clyde church would be turned into a spiritual retreat, and the adjacent hall converted into retreat accommodation.

The diocese is seeking interest from people interested in forming an organising committee to set up a trust to manage the retreat.
