A historic gold mining town was animated at the weekend as it flaunted its creative and cultural flair.

The fifth Across The Bridge festival finished yesterday,  after taking over Bannockburn on Wednesday.

Co-organiser Jan Hawkins said the idea behind the event was to "get the Bannockburn people together to have fun".

"But it’s also about showing outside people the creativity in the town."

The bulk of events were held at the weekend, including the new Bud Burst Festival, celebrating the birth of the 2017 Bannockburn wine vintage and featuring live music and blind wine tastings at the Bannockburn Hotel.

The Bannie Beanie competition returned and drew nine entries for winter hats both locally and from as far afield as the North Island.

Co-organiser Heather McPherson said the entries were always very creative.

"I got the idea from over in Australia and so I thought it would be good to bring it here. Beanies are very popular here in the winter."

The town was busy on the weekend, with some people visiting from Dunedin, she said.

Films played in the historic Kawarau Woolshed last week paying tribute to Otago and Southland heritage.

On top of this was a programme of writers forums, guided walks, and different events celebrating wine, food and art.
