A new medical helicopter pad for Cromwell Aerodrome has been proposed, the Cromwell Community Board heard at its meeting on Monday.

Central Otago District Council Cromwell property and facilities officer Helen Giles said in a report the helipad would be built at no cost to the council, with the Lions Club funding construction and ongoing maintenance costs.

The Lions approached the council in February with the plan for the helipad.

The council had been in contact with the refuelling facility owners and hangar owners, all of whom were supportive, the report said.

The new concrete landing pad would be built near existing refuelling facilities with, ambulance access from Ord Rd.

Only medical helicopters would be able to use the pad, which would allow for easier patient transfers as well as sparing the helicopters having to hop across the airfield to refuel, saving time.

The current landing area is at the northern end of airfield near Ripponvale Rd.

Patients were prepared for helicopter travel in the rear of an ambulance and transferred to the helicopter by a gurney over grass and uneven surfaces.

The Cromwell Community Board accepted the report.
