Roading sub-committee to consider flood escape

The Central Otago District Council will fund an investigation into safe ways Millers Flat residents could escape from a major disaster in the town, such as flooding of the Clutha River.

At a CODC roading sub-committee meeting in Alexandra this week a proposal to investigate the feasibility of seal extensions to School Rd was approved.

Committee members were told School Rd was the only way out of Millers Flat if a flood occurred, and at the best of times the road was too steep and rough for two-wheel drive vehicles.

CODC corporate services manager Heather Kinsey said the road tended to get extremely muddy during winter, and residents were worried about its capacity for an evacuation.

If a seal extension of the road was deemed the best option and approved, it would be funded from the council's seal extension budget for the year, CODC roading manager Julie Muir said.

Once the investigation has been completed a report will be presented to the committee at its next meeting on November 18.

It will include recommendations for the best way to proceed.
