A section of Fruitgrowers Rd in Clyde has been closed as a precaution after a few rocks fell on to the road overnight.

Senior Constable Mike Colligan, of Alexandra, said it was believed to have been caused by the recent heavy rain, and with more rain forecast it was thought safer to close the road as more rock further up the cliff might also be unstable.

An assessment of the cliff was due in coming days, and it was not known when the road would reopen.

Contact Energy has opened the road along the top of the Clyde Dam.
