Service for angel

The Waipiata angel will be centre stage again with a re-dedication ceremony planned for the district's war memorial on Sunday.

The white marble angel which sat atop the war memorial in the town was replaced last year. The original one, dating to when the memorial was put in place in 1927, was showing her years, with her right arm broken and one wing tip damaged. Her head had also been broken off and re-attached, Waipiata Development Committee member Heather Benson said.

The original angel is now displayed in the Waipiata Hall.

Funding a replacement, as well as refurbishing the base of the memorial, cost about $7000, with funds for the angel coming from community groups and the Maniototo Community Board.

The memorial has been re-plastered and cracks repaired.

"It doesn't look any different; just a lot tidier," she said.

The public ceremony begins at 10am. The Rev Stephanie Wells will officiate and the Maniototo Pipe Band will also take part.

A service of remembrance at the memorial will be followed by the planting of a memorial tree on the village green.
