A new Alexandra office for Stand Children's Services will open in May.

Chief executive Dr Fiona Inkpen said about six staff working at the former children's village in Roxburgh would be relocated.

Stand Children's Services announced it was closing the facility in May last year with the loss of 31 jobs.

A jumble sale would be held tomorrow afternoon with everything from children's toys to picture books, booster seats and computer games being offered.

Future plans for the site were yet to emerge.

Department of Conservation (Doc) statutory land management adviser Ken Stewart said Doc was taking over responsibility for the site.

As part of the process, the history of ownership was being investigated, which might result in the land being offered to former owners or Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu.

It was likely the reserve status would be removed and Land Information New Zealand would be asked to consider the future of the land under the Crown land disposal process, Mr Stewart said.

Central Otago Mayor Tim Cadogan said a number of people had suggested ideas rather than solid proposals for the former children's village site.

These included accommodation for backpackers, orchard workers or people taking part in bike trails.

''All of these have involved private enterprise, which would not involve council but would rather occur after the land has been through the Ngai Tahu Claims Settlement Act, should iwi choose not to take an interest in the site.''
