John Grant runs a three-bedroom bed and breakfast at his Hawkdun Rise vineyard.
Six weeks ago he was contacted by American electric-car company Tesla, which wanted to install two chargers on his property.
Mr Grant said he had ''no idea'' why his property was chosen: ''I don't know, and I didn't ask.''
The company paid for the two chargers and their installation, but Mr Grant would pay for the electricity costs.
He hoped it would attract ''high-end clients''.
Tesla spokeswoman Emily Findlay said there were 11 destination chargers in New Zealand.
The Central Otago District Council decided in February to allow Chargenet to establish generic car-charging units in Tarras, Alexandra and Ranfurly.
Tesla chargers do not work on other brands of electric car.
