The Alexandra end of the Roxburgh Gorge Trail is blocked for the felling of about 30 poisoned poplar trees.

The track was closed for the job yesterday and will remain fenced-off today.

Police launched an investigation in January after the trees, which are on Land Information New Zealand land on the southern bank of the river, started dying and drill holes were discovered in them. It was thought poison was poured in the holes.

Senior Sergeant Ian Kerrisk, of Alexandra, said yesterday an investigation into the matter was still deadlocked and police would welcome new information.
