Two major events cancelled due to snow

Snow forced the cancellation of a fundraising concert and mock accident in Ranfurly on Saturday which was to involve emergency services from all over the district.

Many months of planning had been devoted to the event, which was organised by the Maniototo-Wedderburn branch of Red Cross to raise funds for two defibrillators.

"With the amount of snow that was falling, and concerns about the roads, we had no choice but to cancel it all," Maniototo-Wedderburn branch president Lesley Pocknee said.

About 6cm of snow was blanketing the town by the time the concert was scheduled to start but it cleared later that afternoon.

The wintry weather also resulted in the cancellation of a mass cycle ride from Alexandra to Galloway yesterday morning.

The event was to mark the completion of a cycle lane from the centre of Alexandra along Manuherikia Rd towards Galloway, on State Highway 85.

A group of six Alexandra cyclists decided to continue with the ride, braving the rain and plummeting temperatures to use the newly completed cycle lanes.
