Three people were taken to Dunedin Hospital, two with serious injuries, after a head-on crash in the Lindis Pass yesterday.

Emergency services were called to State Highway 8 just before 4pm following reports of a car and van colliding.

Firefighters from Luggate and Cromwell cut a 23-year-old Timaru man from the wreckage of his car after he was trapped inside for about an hour.

He sustained serious leg injuries and was taken to Dunedin Hospital by rescue helicopter. The man was the sole occupant of a sedan which collided with a van near Elliotts Bridge, about 50km from Cromwell.

Both drivers were New Zealanders. Senior Sergeant Dave Scott, of Dunedin, said ''walking wounded'' were all around the crash site.

Four people were in the van one of whom, a woman, received serious back and abdominal injuries. Another received minor injuries. Both were transported to Dunedin Hospital. The other two occupants were uninjured, he said.

Police were last night trying to piece together details of the crash, Snr Sgt Scott said. The holiday road toll stands at five following fatal crashes in Southland, Canterbury, and Bay of Plenty. A woman who was critically injured in a collision between a car and a campervan in Southland on Boxing Day has died.

The 22-year-old Chinese student died in Dunedin Hospital on Saturday afternoon, police said yesterday. It is understood her family have arrived in Dunedin.

Her name is expected to be released today. Another student remains in a critical condition at the same hospital.

The crash happened on the Athol-Five Rivers Highway at the intersection of State Highway 6 and State Highway 97, about 4.15pm on Friday.

Yesterday, a 56-year-old motorcyclist died after colliding with a car on SH7, at Mouse Point Rd, Hurunui, shortly before noon. He was flown to Christchurch Hospital by the Westpac Rescue helicopter but died shortly afterwards.

It followed a fatal crash in Canterbury on Saturday in which Jamie Shane Webb (25), of Christchurch, died after a car hit a power pole.

Five others suffered moderate injuries in the crash in Glentui, in the Waimakariri District, about 6pm.

Mr Webb was believed to be a back-seat passenger who climbed out of the vehicle and was electrocuted by the fallen power lines, police said yesterday.

A man died and three others were critically injured in a crash in the Bay of Plenty yesterday. A car and a milk truck collided near Paengaroa on SH2 about 8am.

A man died in Tauranga on Boxing Day after the rental car he was driving collided with another car.
