Alexandra police are calling for surveillance cameras to be installed in Pioneer Park after another act of damage to Central Otago District Council property in recent months.
Senior Constable Graham Perkins said police would push for cameras to be installed in the park to deter vandals.
The most recent instance occurred early on Saturday, March 2.
Broken glass, some from beer bottles, was found littered throughout Pioneer Park, including in the playground and the public toilets.
The glass was cleaned up by the council property team on Saturday morning.
Snr Const Perkins said the previous night had been quiet and while police had been monitoring the area, he suspected the damage was caused after the police shift ended at 2am.
"We push for cameras — it’d be great to have cameras there."
In the past year, the estimated cost of vandalism to council property district-wide was $53,000.
"That could buy you a really good security system," Snr Const Perkins said.
Three public toilets were badly damaged in Alexandra in January.
A police spokesperson said no charges had been laid at this stage.
Council property and facilities manager Garreth Robinson said a surveillance system was a measure the council was considering. He said quotes had been sought.
Mr Robinson urged people to contact the police if they saw suspicious behaviour.
