Luggate's Tim Moorhouse is the Young Viticulturist of the Year for Central Otago.

He was one of six viticulture supervisors or managers who competed in the regional final of the competition at Otago Polytechnic's Bannockburn base in late July.

Mr Moorhouse, who represented Mount Edward Winery, has won the opportunity to represent Central Otago in the national competitions, which will be held as part of the Romeo Bragato viticulture conference in Christchurch on August 21 to 23.

Nick Paulin (Felton Road Wines) was second in the regional final and Dave Salmon (Carrick Estate) was third.

Competitors faced eight different tasks, a mix of practical and theory.

They were tested on tyre-changing, vine pests and diseases, interpreting weather maps, blind wine tasting, a tractor exercise, agrichemical calibration, pruning skills and irrigation as well as their general knowledge.

Polytechnic viticulture lecturer Raewyn Paviour said the winner of the Romeo Bragato contest would go forward to represent viticulture at the Young Horticulturist of the Year competition at the Ellerslie Flower Show later this year.
