A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokesman said the Alexandra Fire Brigade was responding to reports of roofs being lifted off houses and power lines down in Brandon St.

Trees have also been uprooted on the edge of a water feature near Briar Cres.

The Fenz spokesman said the road was closed and residents were advised to steer clear of the area.

The majority of the reports were received within the past half hour, he said.

A statement on the Aurora Energy website said there was unplanned power outage which had affected 13 residents in Earnscleugh Rd.

It was unclear if the power outage, which started about 3.26pm, was related to the fallen power lines nearby.

The NZ Transport Agency have warned of the high winds in the area from Cromwell to Roxburgh, cautioning drivers and advising them to take extra care on the road, especially if driving a motorcycle or a high-sided vehicle.
