Theresa Radka (8), of Alexandra, moulds plaster sandbags based on a model provided by the Central Otago Model Society at an Anzac-themed holiday programme at the Alexandra Public Library.

The model-trench building is part of a two-week school holiday programme at Alexandra, Roxburgh, Cromwell and Maniototo libraries.

Other projects include making model biplanes and X-rays and assembling first aid kits.

Alexandra librarian Megan Francis said it was great to get the children performing practical activities while learning history.

‘‘It teaches them there are still soldiers going away today and it's good to remember them.''

Theresa said she learned women now served in the army, but they did not in World War 1 and World War 2.

Digging a polystyrene trench was ‘‘hard work, especially when you're not that strong'', she said.
