The Upper Manuherikia Young Farmers Club hosted the annual national competition's Otago district final at the Omakau Domain on Saturday.
Each of the 14 contestants represented an Otago club, despite some hailing from outside the region.
Nightcaps farmer Hayden Peter (27) won the district competition, as well as entry into the regional final to be held at Middlemarch later this year.
Second place winner Elliot Scott (30), of Dunedin, also secured a spot at the regional final, along with Clinton farmer Craig Moffat (25), in third place, and Pete Johnstone (23), of Tapanui, in fourth.
During the competition, which ran from 8am to 2pm, each contestant was judged for their efforts in seven practical tests, interviewed, quizzed, and made to sit a technical exam.
The practical tests involved blind wine-tasting, penning and mouthing sheep, stock judging, fecal examination, welding, topping up wine barrels, setting up a vineyard spraying machine and checking the condition of a horse.
Participants also had to demonstrate their general knowledge of wool processing, animal health products, shearing equipment, first aid and plant material.
A quiz undertaken by the top eight contestants involved the identification of different stock breeds and ailments, as well as questions on current affairs and geography.
Winners of the regional competition will progress to the national final.
