Those hoping to catch an early morning glimpse of Matariki in southern regions this weekend may need to do a bit of travelling.
Niwa’s weather forecast is for "variable cloud cover" over much of Otago, Southland and the West Coast.
The Matariki star cluster is visible on New Zealand’s eastern horizon, just before the sun rises.
Niwa forecasting principal scientist Chris Brandolino said the pre-dawn (3am-6am) forecast for the lower South Island (including Dunedin and Invercargill) today showed cloud and some showers were likely to have "the upper hand" in Invercargill and Gore, but those in eastern Otago and Dunedin were more likely to have less cloud and favourable viewing conditions.
Tomorrow, cloud was likely to hinder viewing and there was the threat of a shower or two, he said.
In the Queenstown and Wanaka areas, cloud and showers were likely to get in the way today, but it may be possible to catch a glimpse of the star cluster tomorrow morning.
He said views would be possible on the West Coast today, but tomorrow would provide the best conditions.
"Ideal conditions are likely from Hokitika southwards, with more cloud likely further north."
He said New Zealanders hoping to see the Matariki stars over the long weekend would have mixed conditions, and the best viewing was likely to be today and tomorrow.
"Stargazers can check Niwa’s cloud cover forecast for the best viewing conditions in their region — Matariki Viewing Conditions — on Vimeo, which is updated at 3.30pm each day for the following morning."
