Ashburton Intermediate trio (from left) Violet Lambert-Lane, Lorraine Paterson and Ashlin Halaufia (all 12) took part in the year 7 and 8 quiz.

A four-team tie-breaker was required to determine third place in the Otago Daily Times Extra! central South Island spelling quiz last night.

The year 5 and 6 event, held at Timaru Boys' High School, was the first of two age-group spelling quizzes held last night.

Four teams - from Gleniti, Long Beach, St Joseph's Timaru and St Joseph's Ashburton schools - had a 10-question spell-off to select the third place team at the event.

That placing eventually went to St Joseph's Ashburton for its 87-point success, while a trio from Gleniti School in Timaru claimed second place with 91 points.

Another Timaru trio, this time from Sacred Heart School, beat 24 other teams for first place in the event.

Daniel van De Spuy, Maddy Green and Jed Fenwick claimed first place after answering a total of 98 out of 100 questions correctly.

It was not the first time the two boys had taken home medals from an Otago Daily Times Extra! quiz.

Daniel and Jed were part of the winning year 5 and 6 general knowledge quiz last year, alongside schoolmate Christian McCambridge.

Last night's year 7 and 8 event was also won by a Timaru team.

Sacred Heart School trio Chloe Gordon, Anastasia Burrell and Annie Henderson claimed first place in the 31-team event, answering 81 out of 100 questions correctly.

There was a two-team tie for second place, with Gleniti School and St Joseph's Timaru both on 80 points.

The year 9 and 10 Otago Daily Times Extra! central South Island spelling quiz will be held at Timaru Boys' High School tonight.
