Road users in parts of the South are warned to watch out for freezing fog and ice on the roads today.

It's a frosty start in Central Otago, with patches of thick fog south of Roxburgh and very cold temperatures as low as -8degC about Ranfurly.

The district council says caution is advised on shaded areas, hill sections and bridge decks.

Danseys Pass Road remains closed (from the gates past the Danseys Pass Hotel) due to snow and ice.

In the Queenstown Lakes district, there's clear skies, cold temperatures and a chance of ice forming on the roads.

Grit has been applied over the Crown Range, linking Queenstown and Wanaka, and through Cardrona.

There is water running across the road at Arrow Junction this morning.  Contractors are investigating but road users are asked to slow down and take extra care in this area.

The Milford Road is open, but expect ice and grit along State Highway 94 today.

MetService said today was forecast to be fine with morning frosts across Otago, Southland and Fiordland.

Further north, highways through Canterbury are open, but care is needed and chains essential on some roads, NZTA advised.

SH73 Arthurs Pass to Otira - Road open, chains essential. The road is closed to towing vehicles. Road users should be mindful of road clearing crews in the area.

SH8 Burkes Pass to Twizel - Forecast low temperatures means ice is expected to affect this route. Drive to the conditions.

SH80 - Aoraki Mt Cook Highway -  The road is now open following an earlier closure. Due to the recent fire damage alongside SH80 a 30km/h speed restriction will be in place while Fire Emergency staff are on site.

SH 79 Fairlie to Rangitata - Snow and Ice - Road users are advised to take care and to drive to the conditions.

Snow warnings have been lifted for alpine roads the Lewis Pass (SH7), Arthur's Pass (SH73) and Porters Pass (SH73).
