Children at Mosgiel Central Kindergarten love nothing more than pottering in their garden and this year they were rewarded with the Toroa Award for best conservation work in a school or kindergarten in coastal Otago.
The children began their sustainability journey three years ago when they started collecting food scraps to feed the pigs owned by some of their families, head teacher Paula Reynolds said.
The children then started a vegetable garden to grow food for the kindergarten's two guinea pigs, five birds and a rabbit.
The interest in gardening then expanded to creating a native garden and orchard.
