Health board delays 'unacceptable'

Delays by the Otago and Southland district health boards in acting on health workforce issues raised in community workshops in March and April are unacceptable, Peter Barron says.

Mr Barron told the boards' combined disability support advisory committee meeting this week he had originally hoped the workshops would assist board planning for the 2007-08 year, but it now appeared this would not happen until the next financial year.

The committee had received a presentation on the workshops in May, but was still waiting for feedback from those who took part.

There were issues such as the rigidity of board contracts, which the boards should be dealing with now and not waiting for further feedback.

It was time for action rather than talk, he said.

Regional general manager for planning and funding David Chrisp apologised for the delay.

Within the next fortnight, it was expected a self-nominated group from among the more than 80 participants in the three workshops would meet and agree on those matters which could be dealt with relatively simply and those which would need to be addressed in the long term.

The workshops were designed to explore ways those involved with health services could work with the board to achieve a sustainable, renewable and integrated health workforce.

Among the issues discussed were recruitment, retention, inadequate and inconsistent rates of pay, and the lack of cohesion among services and between services and the board.
