10,000 balloons in 7 hours

After seven hours and a lot of puff, 10,100 balloons were blown up in the Weston Scouts den on Friday night.

Now, Main Street Youth will submit the feat for an inaugural record in the Guinness Book of Records.

About 50 members of the group started blowing up the balloons at 6.15pm.

Record attempt organiser Eugen Dupru said they finished with about 15 people at 1.30am on Saturday.

Originally, it was thought the attempt would take about three hours, but it became evident after 2000 balloons were inflated in about an hour and a-half it would take a lot longer.

The record attempt was signed off by an Oamaru police observer, a videotape was made and now all the information will be sent to the Guinness Book of Records for consideration as a world record.

Originally, it was intended to release about 100 balloons filled with helium into the sky after the record attempt, then have a competition popping the rest.

However, those taking part played in the air-filled balloons, which came up to their necks, then asked for them to be left in the Scout den for a week so the rest of the group could enjoy them.

The balloons were all donated by local businesses and inflated using two compressors, a balloon inflating machine and helium gas cylinders.

The 50 young people who helped with the record attempt were divided into three teams, one inflating balloons while the other two competed in games.

Main Street Youth has about 60 members and meet weekly at Weston on Friday nights and Papakaio on Saturday nights.
