More than $9000 has been raised to help provide the funds for a sixth teacher at Palmerston Primary School.

A cheque for $9381.36 was handed over at the school assembly yesterday by fundraising convener Jacqui Chittock, of Meadowbank.

A lamb competition, with 109 lambs entered, was very successful, Mrs Chittock said.

The fundraising had provided about a quarter of the cost of employing a sixth teacher, school board of trustees chairman Stef Witehira said. The board would not have been able to fund the full amount needed.

Mrs Chittock supported the need for the sixth teacher at the school.

She had come up with the fundraising idea and had organised it, he said.

The roll at Palmerston Primary School had reached the number required for a sixth teacher during each of the last two years, principal Dan Dilkes said.

When a sixth teacher was appointed, a considerable amount of class reorganisation was required.

The school had almost become a "victim of its own success", he said. A sixth teacher being employed for the whole year prevented that disruption, he said.
