Mr Lawson was found by a tourist at 7am.
Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said police would be investigating Mr Lawson's death. A post-mortem was being done today.
Police would not know the cause of death until after the post-mortem.
Mr Lawson's family was grateful to those volunteers who combed Cobblestone Rd, on the north bank of the river to the river mouth, and the adjacent coastline on Monday for Mr Lawson, whose car was found in the area early on Sunday.
The search was to have resumed today.
Police are seeking any sightings of Mr Lawson at Kakanui or in the wider Oamaru area on Saturday night or Sunday morning.
