The victims of four dog attacks in the Waitaki district last month were a child and three adults, information provided by Waitaki District Council regulatory manager Lichelle Guyan shows.

The Otago Daily Times last week reported the council was very concerned about the rising incidence of dog attacks and dogs wandering without owners, warning owners heavy penalties can be imposed.

There have been 17 dog attacks so far this year compared with 13 all of last year and 344 reports of wandering dogs in the past five months (273 for the corresponding period last year).

After an inquiry by the ODT, Mrs Guyan said the four dog attacks last month resulted in various injuries, some requiring medical attention and stitches.

Two dog were euthanised, and the other two were classified as dangerous. Three infringement notices were issued.

Mrs Guyan said there were ''a staggering number of wandering, lost and found dogs'', and the growing number was causing real concern for the council.

The council thoroughly investigated dog attacks and there were heavy penalties.

Dogs could also be categorised as dangerous, with higher licensing fees and additional controls.

A new Waitaki dog control policy and bylaw came into force on November 3 and educational material was being developed to help dog owners understand their responsibilities.
