The Waitaki District Council has concerns about the effect heavy vehicles are having on the bridge at Gemmells Crossing.
An inspection of the single-lane bridge has revealed potential weaknesses and more repair work is required, Waitaki District Council roading manager Michael Voss said.
Mr Voss said the bridge would remain open and was safe, but some restrictions would be put in place for motorists' safety and to protect the integrity of the structure.
''We're proposing to apply a speed restriction of 50kmh for all vehicles until suitable repairs are made,'' Mr Voss said.
''Though the bridge is safe for lighter vehicles, we have concerns about the effect heavy vehicles are having on the bridge, particularly when braking. Ideally we want motorists to slow down as they approach the bridge.''
The council hoped a 50kmh speed limit would extend the life of the bridge, which carries about 150 vehicles every day, he said.
Signs will be raised and rumble strips placed at both ends of the bridge to warn drivers to slow down.
''We plan to progressively upgrade the bridge over the next couple of years,'' Mr Voss said.
