Electricity was cut to about 300 homes in the Moeraki area on Saturday after a car crashed into a power pole just before 11am.

Senior Constable Wayne Brew, of Hampden, said two cars were travelling south when one slowed to turn into a driveway on State Highway 1 and the following car struck the turning vehicle from behind.

He said there were no injuries.

One of the vehicles was carrying five people, while two were in the other vehicle.

No information about ages of the drivers or where they were from was available.

Police were still assessing which driver was liable.

Network Waitaki spokesman David Paterson said power was out to homes for about four hours.

Mr Paterson said the power company would wait to receive more information about the crash before a decision about pursuing costs would be made.
