The man's body was found on Sunday afternoon in high country farmland in the Five Forks area, southwest of Oamaru.
Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said at this stage in the investigation it was believed the man died after a medical event.
Sergeant Blair Corlet, of Oamaru, said police were notified at 11.43pm on Saturday, that a hunting party had lost contact with one of their companions.
On Sunday, about 12.30pm, the search and rescue helicopter found the hunter's body near where he was last heard from by his two associates.
``He just shot a pig. I believe he was located not too far away from the animal,'' Sgt Corlet said.
Sgt Wilkinson said the hunting party did everything right when they tried to find their missing companion.
The deceased man had been well prepared and had a locator beacon, but had not activated it.
