On consecutive nights in Oamaru, allegedly drunk middle-aged female drivers crashed into a traffic light and a lamppost, police say.

On Monday, a 44-year-old Oamaru woman is alleged to have pulled out from Severn St and narrowly missed a truck-and-trailer unit. She then drove into a traffic light, while attempting to pull into Thames St.

She recorded breath-alcohol level of 866mcg.

On Sunday night, a 48-year-old Oamaru woman allegedly crashed the car she was driving into a lamppost at the corner of Clyde and Don Sts, after failing to give way.

Her breath-alcohol level was 1152mcg.

The legal breath-alcohol level for a person aged 20 or over is 250mcg.

Both women are due to appear in the Oamaru District Court in October.
