Fire crews manage to quell blaze before wind arises

A fire in the Hakataramea Valley that started in a tree line had three sheds "totally involved" yesterday, but a threat to a  homestead was averted.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokesman said the service was called at 6.10pm to the Cattle Creek area.

When firefighters arrived, they found three outbuildings had caught fire.

There were four fire trucks at the scene, and three tankers.

Firefighters from Kurow, Duntroon, Otematata and Waimate were still fighting the fire about 7pm.

"The homestead was threatened for a little bit there, but our guys have worked well to make sure that’s all covered," the spokesman said.

Shortly after 9pm Fenz said crews were still at the scene, though activity at the site was "winding down a bit".

High winds were expected for the area, "which is why they really wanted to hit it hard and fast".

He said the crews had not called for a fire investigator, which meant they were comfortable they knew what the cause of the fire was.

The Otago Daily Times understands nobody was injured.
