Funky bike stand challenge

Omarama has come up with a different way to beat the cost of providing bike stands for the Alps 2 Ocean cycleway: design and build their own.

The town's Business Group is running a competition for businesses, residents, holiday-home owners, or anyone else, to design and build "funky, fun, quirky and out-there" bike stands in time for the opening later this year of the 312km cycleway from Mt Cook to Oamaru.

Group member Glenys Dawson said it was a fun project, making something unique for Omarama.

The aim was to have the unique stands outside Omarama businesses and public areas such as the hall, parks, playground and other areas.

Any material could be used, even something recycled. The only requirements were the stands be sturdy, weatherproof and have some way for bikes to be chained or padlocked to them for security.

"We need to have bike stands in place for the first part of the trail which opens in October," she said.

The town would also end up with something with character and different for cyclists.

The deadline for entries is August 31, the winner being decided by popular vote.
