A rare chance to see one of the "magnificent" creations in last years’ World of Wearable Arts Awards (Wow) is on offer at the Oamaru Opera House.

Local artist Tracey Vickers’ entry, "Maiden Of The Ferns" (at right), was a finalist at the international design competition last year which attracted entries from more than 40 countries.

Director of the Ōamaru Opera House Frances McElhinney said they were honoured to have the privilege of displaying the artwork and look forward to welcoming the community to view it.

Mrs Vickers, who recently contributed to the design of the Awamoa Park mural, designed the artwork and created it using recycled upholstery scraps, plastic packaging, EVA window seals, Worbla, a brand of thermo plastic modelling materials and sequins.

The theme for the Wow awards was titled "Beyond: Journey into a Futuristic World".

Mrs Vickers’ story behind the display was inspired by the historical New Zealand story of naturalists and collectors, extinction and conservation.

"Maiden of the Ferns" will be on display in the main foyer of the Opera House until the end of February.
