Growing hoe down at bigger venue

The annual country music hoedown is moving up-country to Omarama. It has become so popular it needs a bigger venue.

It started as a small country music event at the Hakataramea Hotel, shifted to Otematata when the hotel closed and now the 24th event in November has become the Omarama Merino Countrytime Hoedown.

Last year's hoedown attracted up to 600 people a day, many bringing motor homes and campervans to the event.

Organiser Ferg Mitchell said this year's event, from November 19 to 21, would be even bigger. The South Canterbury Motorhome Association was organising a rally to attend.

"We simply ran out of room to accommodate everyone, particularly campervans and motor homes," he said.

The Countrytime hotel at Omarama and its large grounds would better accommodate the event. Motor-home owners would be charged a small fee for weekend sites, money going to the Omarama Fire Brigade and its first response unit.

A large marquee would be put up on the ground for the entertainment, which would start on the Friday night at 7pm and continue until Sunday night.

Organisers hoped to put a large guitar alongside the merino sculpture in the centre of town.

"It's very exciting. we have the support of the whole community of Omarama, all wanting to be involved in this great country music weekend," he said.

The hoedown will again be supported by main sponsor, Mike Hedges Builders of Cromwell, and the Countrytime has also backed the event with special rates.

There had been a "tremendous response" to early notification of the event and venue change. People were already starting to book accommodation for the weekend.
