Waitaki District Health Services, which runs Oamaru Hospital, has recorded an operating profit of $89,259 for the past financial year.

That compared with a loss of $107,743 the previous year.

The group, which includes the company's charitable trust, returned a surplus of $571,337 for the year ending June 30, compared with $525,915 the previous year.

The company is wholly owned by the Waitaki District Council.

In the annual report to be presented to the council on Tuesday, chairman George Berry said current issues included lack of funding support from the Otago District Health Board for the local provision of CT scanning services, continuing issues with staff recruitment, increasing fuel, medical supply and other operational costs, Meca (Multi Employer Collective Agreement) increases that needed to be accommodated, compliance requirements, threat of reduction in funding for maternity services and the decreasing availability of medical specialists providing local outpatient clinics.

Highlights included the establishment of the CT scanner service, the purchase of new radiology general X-ray, mobile X-ray and ultrasound equipment, radiology reporting turn-around time improved, three year roll-over of contract negotiated with the ODHB planning and funding for the provision of hospital services, medical cover in Kurow extended and the establishment of an Oamaru Hospital website.

A total of 7420 bed days were occupied in Takaro Ward with an occupancy rate of 88.8%.

Outpatients treated 10,181 people and there were 98 births in the maternity centre.
