A 64-year-old Palmerston man has been charged in connection with an alleged hit-and-run incident in the town on Sunday afternoon.
A vehicle crashed into the rear of a Toyota MR2 car that had stopped at the pedestrian crossing in the main street about 2.45pm, Constable Stefan Witehira said.
The driver allegedly reversed and then rammed into the vehicle two more times, pushing the car out of the way, before driving off.
The man, who was found by police at 7am yesterday, has been charged with two counts of driving under the influence of drink causing injury, two counts of dangerous driving causing injury and one charge of failing to stop and ascertain injury after an accident.
He will appear in the Oamaru District Court tomorrow.
The two male occupants of the MR2, both from Christchurch, received whiplash and were very shaken.
They had stopped to let a woman cross the pedestrian crossing and it was "pure luck" she had not stepped out when the crash occurred, Const Witehira said.
The MR2 was extensively damaged and had to be towed away, while the other vehicle was also extensively damaged.
