Information sought on gunshot incident

Police are seeking information in relation to reports of gunshots at a Glenavy rest area north of Oamaru on Tuesday night.

Police from Oamaru and Waimate converged on the lay-by on the northern side of the Waitaki River bridge after a report at least three gunshots were heard between 9.30pm and 10pm.

A police cordon remained in place until about 2pm yesterday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Quested, of Timaru, said the focus of the investigation was now "identifying the people that could have been involved and examining the items of interest that we've found".

Glenavy's Waitaki River Motor Camp owner Anne Lomas said police had kept the incident tightly under wraps.

"It was only those that wandered past [who knew] and a lot of people in the little Riverside Village didn't know a thing.

"I spoke to a few people ... they were not aware of it until I brought it up."

Det Snr Sgt Quested has asked anyone with information about the incident to contact police.

"Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area of Glenavy around the time [of the incident] on Tuesday night, particularly if you have a dash camera or saw anything unusual or suspicious."
