Waitaki Boys’ High School commissioner Nicola Hornsey has announced her departure from the school and identified her successor.

When classes begin in  2017, recently appointed rector Darryl Paterson will be joined by  Invercargill lawyer Craig Smith as commissioner. Mr Smith is the former Southland Girls’ High School board of trustees chairman. He  was "really, the right sort of person" for the next stage for the school — working  to establish a board of trustees — Ms Hornsey told the Otago Daily Times.

"He knows what good schools look like."

Ms Hornsey was appointed commissioner  in October 2014 following  problems with pastoral care, communication and public relations, governance, good practice and employment.

After an "extensive redesign phase", Waitaki Boys’ was ready for a change in governance, Ms Hornsey said.

"I do feel I’m leaving it, obviously, in good hands but also in a really good position — otherwise I wouldn’t depart."

"In terms of good governance, I’ve been there for a little over two years, and I think the contribution I can make has been made.

"It’s almost good to go, I would say."

Clive Rennie has served as acting rector for the past year and  Ms Hornsey credited him with the school’s  resurgence.

Mr Rennie said Ms Hornsey had done a "tremendous job" and had a "huge impact".

"I am quite sure that this job was a really taxing, emotional job and I think she has done a first-rate job for the school."

"I think we got great outcomes for boys as a result of her skills."

Ms Hornsey said she would work with Mr Rennie to ensure the transition of leadership at both governance and management levels as Mr Smith and Mr Paterson took charge.
