Items stolen from vehicles

Oamaru police are investigating after two vehicles were unlawfully entered and items stolen on Monday afternoon.

A handbag was taken from an unlocked car parked on Tamar St about 1.50pm, before a second vehicle parked on Wansbeck St, which was also unlocked, was entered about 3pm and cash stolen.

Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said it was possible the alleged thefts were linked, ''given the close proximity to each other and the timeframe''.

''But it may be two separate people might have seen the opportunity, so we have got an open mind on that.''

He advised people to ensure their vehicles were locked at all times.

''There are opportunistic thieves entering unlocked cars and stealing items from them.''

Monday's incidents follow the theft of a stereo from a vehicle parked at Awamoa Park on Friday night after a lock was forced.

It was one of several vehicles damaged on Friday, including one in which a tail light was smashed and a rear panel damaged.

So far, no arrests had been made, Sgt Wilkinson said.
