John Bean, of Oamaru, (above) was one of about 50 keen woodturners who gathered at the club houses at the Oamaru Racecourse on Saturday.

The club houses, the home of the Waitaki Woodturners Guild played host to Spin Around Waitaki from Friday to Sunday.

About 35 registered participants came from Nelson to Invercargill for the weekend of woodturning - and perhaps 20 showed up on Saturday from Canterbury and Otago for the demonstrations by Australian master Ken Wraight of Melbourne. Secretary of the Waitaki Woodturners Guild Verna Chambers said she was pleased with the turnout, despite the fact woodturning continued to draw more of a mature crowd.

''Numbers are around about the same as last year,'' she said.

''Numbers are getting down a bit, because we're all getting older and some of us are falling off the other end - and we haven't got enough younger ones coming on who are interested.''
