About 100 brand-new books in North Otago are about to go on journeys to encourage more people to experience the joy of the written word.

As part of Adult Learning Week, Literacy North Otago and New Zealand Post will hand out books to people from both the NZ PostShop on Coquet St, Oamaru, and the Kurow Information Centre between 11am and 2pm on Friday.

Literacy North Otago manager Helen Jansen said it was hoped the books would all make a long journey after being passed on from one reader to another and so on.

''The idea is to take the book from the PostShop, register online for the draw prize, read it and then take it and leave it where someone else may find it and be curious enough to read it - a doctor or dentist's waiting room, cafe, bar or some other dry, public place.

''The next person finds it, picks it up and then does the same thing.

''The book may well travel with the reader and be left in Dunedin, Timaru or further afield. Come and choose one and set it off on its journey - who knows where?''

Ms Jansen said a ''wonderful selection'' of 100 new books was available and added that there were ''books for all''.

''If someone reads more of a book than they ever have before, that is marvellous. For those who would like some assistance with that process or any other literacy, numeracy or computing challenges, the Open Learning Centre on Ribble St [Oamaru] is the place to be.''

Literacy North Otago also had tutors available in the Waitaki Valley and Palmerston areas, she said.
